Mashable Social Good Conference: How Musicians Use Social Media to Inspire Activism [VIDEO]

A surprisingly inspired piece from Mashable’s Social Good conference, held in NYC last week.  The panel, which featured musicians Lupe Fiasco and Kenna Zemedkun, VP of Sustainability Marketing at ignition Simon Isaacs, Founder of Lovesocial Azita Ardakani, and Rolling Stone contributing writer Laura Checkoway, discussed a range of the participants projects and their collective perspective on how the music industry creates mutually beneficial opportunities for record/artist promotions and social causes.

Traditionally, I’ve been weary of artist promotion of the social good, finding that their work lacks substance and intelligent dialogue.  This panel’s thoughts altered my opinion. Their work epitomize the idea of Social Entrepreneurship, offering interesting ideas as to how artists with a genuine social message can leverage their social media resources to inform fans about important causes, all while marketing new creative projects.  Lupe Fiasco’s We Are Lasers project is a primary example of how this approach can work. Check his We Are Not Losers. We Are Lasers video here.  This is creative economy.
