RECORD LABELS are EVOLVING

Over the last few months I’ve noticed that major record labels, and the artists they support, are beginning to adjust their approach to the marketing and selling of new projects in much the same way that “indies” and the developing online music community have been doing for the past few years.  I highlight these examples not as evidence of how lost the “majors” are, but rather as evidence that they are rapidly adjusting their models to the new marketplace.

Fans do not care whether the plans are executed by “indies” or “majors.” Fans respond to engaging promotions and material from their favorite artists.  The “majors” are beginning to get it right.  In the end, they will win because they have more money, and greater market presence.  Moreover, they’ve allowed the smaller, independent market to determine what works and what doesn’t in the digital realm and are now borrowing the best ideas to sell more music.  The market for big media is correcting itself and will eventually be more profitable than it ever has been.  The posts that follow provide support for this argument.
