In anticipation of his forthcoming album release, Kanye West (with permission of his label Def Jam) have released 10 fully realized tracks on consecutive Fridays for free download by fans (no fan club membership required). This idea has become common, especially in the “indie” realm, but seeing an artist as significant as West not only embracing it, but offering this much free material is significant. While the album’s first single Stronger has not done well at radio, the GOOD Friday concept, in conjunction with West’s joining of social networks Facebook and Twitter, have generated considerable buzz about the project. This projects marks an important moment in the trajectory of the music business. I look forward to seeing how West and Def Jam continue to develop promotions for the project.
