LIL WAYNE’ AND MOTOWN UNIVERSAL’S DIGITAL ALBUM RELEASE | RECORD LABELS ARE EVOLVING

Digital Release of Lil’ Wayne’s I Am Not a Human Being

  • Lil’ Wayne and label Cash Money/Universal Motown, decided to release his recent album solely on a digital basis several weeks prior to the physical release. While the decision worried brick and mortar stores who sell the physical album, the decision is a shrewd experiment on the label’s part.  By releasing the album digitally first, they can limit the number of physical albums produced, cutting their costs, while driving more business to the digital arena.  The digital marketplace will become a much more cost effective distribution network once labels depart entirely from the physical realm. This album’s release is a signaling by Universal Motown of their increasing comfort with the digital marketplace and an indication of their intentions moving forward.  Again, this is a trend (digital release of records) we first saw develop out of the “indie” scene.
