Robert Smithson - Spiral Jetty (1970)
“The real breakthrough came once I was able to break this religious, pagan, anthropomorphism.” The breakthrough he spoke of was the choice to depart from painting altogether, in favor of sculpture, and ultimately “eathworks,” the term/movement he pioneered. The Spiral Jetty is the iconic work of this movement.
