The Records of a Market’s Evolution (via WSJ)

Leo Castelli with Jasper Johns, whom he found and made the world understand.

Castelli was reluctant to throw anything away. Among the papers are sales records for every artwork sold by the gallery during the dealer’s lifetime; correspondence with its artists (including John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Lichtenstein, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol) and with collectors; published reviews of each of the gallery’s exhibits; and photographs of anyone associated with the gallery. The archive, now available for public consumption in Washington, could be a tremendous resource for us to better understand how the modern art market has evolved.  Time to book a flight to D.C.
